Stations are part of city's new hot weather strategy
In an effort to prevent any heat-related deaths on the streets of Vancouver, city council set up five portable water stations and a website with lots of advice on how to beat the heat.
Councillor Andrea Reimer says the watering holes are a hit. "I don't have access to figures, but I know that when I've gone by two of them during the last week, they've had good, healthy line-ups, which is great to see," she says.
The water stations are attached to fire hydrants and don't affect the hydrant performance should fire crews need them.
She says the city has been taking cues from Toronto on how to deal with extreme weather. The hot weather response plan was set up after a man died from heat exposure in Grandview Park last year.
